Singapore> Vision & Ethos
Education in Singapore does two things: it develops the individual and
educates the citizen. In nurturing the whole child, education develops
the child morally, physically, socially and aesthetically.
At the end of primary school the desired outcomes for children include
being able to:
- Distinguish right from wrong;
- Share and put others first;
- Build friendships with others;
- Have a lively curiosity about the world;
- Think and express themselves;
- Take pride in their work;
- Have cultivated healthy habits;
- Love Singapore.
Each school interprets these aims individually in its vision and
mission statement. Creating the vision involves representatives from all
parts of the school community taking part in consultation meetings to
ensure that everyone’s opinions are taking into consideration.
Statements are reviewed periodically.
Colourful and imaginative displays to illustrate the school’s vision and
mission focus attention on the core values. Inspirational displays are
prominent in the halls, with messages about the vision and ethos clear
for all to see. This can also be found on the school’s website, hand
book and even on business cards! Vision statements commonly encompass
being ‘happy learners,’ ‘leaders in every pupil’ and ‘becoming learners
for life’ and also examine the role of the school within the community
that it serves.
Schools also clearly identify values, which are reinforced through daily
assemblies. At Seng Kang the character values are respect,
responsibility, love and honesty. Similar values are interpreted in
different ways at each school.
At Northland Primary the photographs of staff and school helpers are
presented in a train, showing the learning journey of the school,
whereas at Seng Kang the visual image is a house with the head and
senior management at the bottom, representing the solid foundations for
learning.
Visitors to schools can clearly see how the vision is interpreted and
followed through in the work of the pupils, staff and school community.
