National Institute of Education
NIE is sole teacher training institute in Singapore and is part of the
Nanyang Technological University. It provides initial teacher training,
offering BA, BSc, DipEd and PGCE courses, as well as masters courses for
the MSc, MA and PhD.
Before the Second World War, provision for teacher education in
Singapore was on a small and ad hoc basis, developing in spurts in
response to short-term manpower needs. With the expansion in school
enrolment at the end of the WWII an unprecedented need for teachers was
created, making the training of teachers on a long-term and organised
basis imperative and leading to the establishment of the Teachers'
Training College (TTC).
On 1 April 1973, the Institute of Education (IE) was established,
followed in July 1984 by the College of Physical Education (CPE), which
merged to form NIE in July 1991.
As well as the usual university facilities, students can also take
advantage of the Nanyang Playhouse, a theatre with seating for 150 which
is used for both the drama programme and for productions; an art
gallery, used as a teaching space and for student exhibitions; excellent
indoor and outdoor sporting facilities and the new Students’ Hub,
opening in August 2006, which includes a café, meeting rooms and
amphitheatre.
