Colombia>  Back to the UK!

On return to the UK both Julia and Christine gave presentations to other Music Service staff and consultants, basing an INSET day on observations and reflections.

The following are a few comments and suggestions by the Instrumental staff in discussions after the above presentation:

‘In the UK we’ve lost our sense of community’

‘We need workshops in school time to bring parents/pupils/teachers together’

‘We need to identify the Community Groups and musicians in our local communities’

‘Our children have wider interests with less time for commitment to rehearsals’

‘Should be able to create a better cycle of teaching and learning (as observed in Colombia)’

‘Better reward system should be explored’

‘More enthusiasm for new ideas required, especially from the top!’

‘Parents should be encouraged to get more directly involved in both teaching and ensembles’

‘encourage parents to ‘drop in’ to lessons and participate’
‘Peer support using the older ones to mentor or even teach the younger ones’

‘Start a real community music centre based on a band or orchestra 8-80!’

Some of the above ideas are in the process of being explored (although some, such as the community music centre are proving very difficult to implement through the usual suspects of funding and child protection!).
